Away Luggage Review

I have now had the luggage for about 6 months and I still stand by my initial review. My Away Carry on is still in great condition and working as if new! In that time I have been to South Korea, Cuba, Costa Rica, and all over Europe. Not to mention a few local overnight trips as well.

I have always been intrigued by smart luggage and wondered if it was worth the hefty price tag. (Spoiler Alert: IT SO IS) When I got the chance to test out Away Luggage (carry on size) I was beyond excited.

IT FITS A RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF STUFF

You may be wondering why a crazy budget seeker like me is recommending a luggage that is over $225. The first added benefit that I absolutely love is their new compression system. It makes this a no brainer for people who want to avoid checking luggage and the fees that come with it.

Here is everything I packed in the smallest version of their carry on: (but seriously click the video it is super short)

  • Sweatpants and a tank (to sleep in)
  • 1 pair of Jeans, 1 pair of thick black dress leggings
  • 3 Sweaters
  • 1 nice silk dress
  • 1 sweater dress
  • 1 scarf, 1 winter hat, 2 pairs of thick socks
  • 1 huge chunky combat boots with heels
  • All my toiletries and makeup
  • Undergarments
  • 1 black clutch (purse for the men reading)
  • Brush, Chi hair straightener
  • Laptop

The best part is there is still tons of room for more.

So it fits a lot of stuff – a lot of carry ons do that. But if you see in the video (click the damn video!) their compression system really does make a difference when it comes to pushing all your clothes together and down so you can use the other side for toiletries/shoes/makeup and other stuff.

THE BUILT IN BATTERY

checked luggageThe second game changer is the battery pack that comes built in to the checked luggage. I have been in a lot of airports and slowly the major ones are coming around to having outlets everywhere but there are still a ton of airports out there where charging your phone (or ipad, or camera, or gopro) is a nightmare! (I’m looking at you MIA – get with the times)

When it arrives at your house the pack is charged and ready to go. Before each trip I charge up my luggage overnight and then (for short trips) I leave the charger at home. This is because the battery pack will recharge your phone FROM DEAD a total of five times! Plus it comes with two usb outlets so you can charge two devices at once. What is the best way to make friends in an airport? Offer up your charger – maybe in exchange for some starbucks coffee….Here is a great little pro-tip from a seasoned traveler: If your phone is running on empty on your way to the airport your plug it into you check luggage and tuck it inside. That way while you are navigating the airport and going through security it charges up. (#multitaskingqueen)

OTHER BENEFITS

carry-on-luggageAnother great little added benefit is the laundry bag that comes in the small pouch built into the side of the bag. I love being able to stuff clothes in there when they get gross and not having to worry about stealing a bag from the hotel or letting my sweaty clothes infect my clean clothes. (who else is a huge germaphobe – raise your hand high – I’m right there with you.) Plus you can use the bag to hold you belongings if you are going anywhere you are worried about sand and water. It is waterproof!

The carry on measurements are perfect for not only american based flights but also the budget carriers in Europe and Asia. This is a huge plus because there are certain airlines that love to tack on extra fees for your carry on being a half inch too big (looking at you RyanAir) and that just won’t happen with this piece of luggage.

The hard shell on the luggage has so far held up quite well and I suggest getting it in a darker color if you want to hide scratch marks.

FINAL THOUGHTS

travel luggage

So after a lot of details about the bag I will leave you with this…Yes I am a budget traveler, and I will try to save money in every way possible, BUT if you are a constant traveler and are looking for a bag that will help you deal with the stress of the airport then just get it. It is invaluable when it comes to packing a ton of stuff and charging on the go. Plus at a $225 it is an excellent price point for this nice a piece of checked spinner luggage.

  1. Hey! Is this the basic carry-on or the bigger carry-on?

  2. I’m thinking of buying this but am a bit concerned about Ryanair. You say it fits but the dimensions on the Away website suggest it it an inch deeper then allowed by Ryanair. Have you had to put it in the sizer and was it ok? Any advice appreciated.

Hey Joy! I have taken this on Ryan Air before even though it is a bit bigger than dimensions. I do caution you to buy at your own risk since I feel it is a case by case basis. I think I got a nice gate agent who wasn’t micro checking baggage. Hope that helps.

  3. It is so cool because it can charge the gadget too!

I know this is old – but how are the wheels? how easily does it roll? Thanks!

Hey! I have added an update on the top but it rolls great! I have had it for over 6 months now and it is still looking like new 🙂

Ooo very cool. I especially love the laundry bag!

You pretty much sold me on this luggage! I always struggle trying to fit a lot of stuff in my carry on and the compression feature seems to be the solution!

I’ve been wanting to try out this luggage!
